- Christopher Raynard, an old resident of Ethel Village, Grey Township, died at his home Saturday morning Oct 19th, 1929, aged 85 years. Mr Raynard was born on the Mitchell Road, Blanshard, in 1844, son of William Raynard and his wife, Rebecca Sparling. He married Elizabeth Jane Armstrong, daughter of Thomas Armstrong and his wife, Agnes Lucy Switzer, 1868. Mr. Raynard was picking apples from a very high tree when a rung of the ladder on which he was standing broke and he fell on a stake that was in use for tying up berry bushes. It penetrated his abdomen. He died twelve hours afterward. His funeral, which was held on Tuesday afternoon at Brussels cemetery, was very largely attended by relatives and acquaintances from far and near. He leaves beside his widow, a son, Joseph Maxwell of Lucknow, and five daughters, Mrs. John Maxwell (Agnes Irwin) of Winnipeg; Mrs. Harvey Dobson (Lucy Rebecca Sparling) of Ethel; Mrs. (Rev.) Edwin Lucas Winnifred Annie Armstrong) of Wisconsin; Mrs. Charles Congram (Mary Edna Shelby) of Holyrood; Mrs. Ernest Ackert (Elizabeth Olive Moore) of Holyrood. Two daughters predeceased him, Margaret Hazel in infancy and Mrs. George Barnath (Ellen Ernestine Barnett) of Pembina, North Dakota. He leaves 20 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Raynard visited at the home of Mrs. Raynard's sister for one day a few months ago. A good industrious man has "crossed over the river." - received from Margot Jorgensen
